Benong Wildlife Sanctuary, a part of the famous Rajaji National Park, is situated amidst the thick jungles at a distance of about 11 Km from Library
point in Mussoorie. It has been developed as a bird - watching haven. It is well surrounded by snow laden peaks of the Himalayas. Magnificent views of snow peaks like
Chaukhamba and Bandar Punch can be seen from this sanctuary.
The solitary peak of Benong Tibba is located 9 km west of Mussorie.
Jwalaji Temple dedicated to Goddess Durga is located at the top (2104m).
The hill is bounded by dense forests.
This sanctuary houses several species of exotic birds such as White Capped Water Redstart, Red Billed Blue Magpie and many more. The Sanctuary was once a home of the
Himalayan quail, an extinct bird, last sighted in 1876. Both herbivores and carnivores species are found in abundance including Himalayan goat, panther, leopards, deer
and Himalayan bear. The flora of the forest mainly comprises of fir and pine trees. In addition to this, the area is rich in medicinal plants also.
This trekking trail is a delight for environment and botanical lovers, and also for historians.
You cross the magnificent colonial building of Savoy Hotel, French lines of a chateau, Waverley Covent, thick forest areas and more.
One who is nature lover should not miss the stunning view of the rising sun.
However, in order to get there in time to watch the sunrise, one is expected to leave very early from lower Mussoorie.
